317 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate

317 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate (UNS S31700, 1.4449)

317 stainless steel is a highly corrosion-resistant material, commonly used in environments that require resistance to both oxidation and corrosion, such as chemical processing, food production, and marine environments.

Key Features of 317 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate:

  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive conditions.
  • Strength: Offers better strength at high temperatures than 304 and 316 stainless steels.
  • Fabrication: Can be cold-worked or welded but is prone to work hardening.
  • Applications: Often used in food processing equipment, pharmaceutical machinery, heat exchangers, marine environments, and chemical containers.

Corrosion Resistance

  • Chloride Corrosion Resistance: Stainless Steel 317L is highly resistant to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. The addition of molybdenum (3.0 – 4.0%) to its composition significantly improves its resistance to these types of corrosion, making it suitable for marine environments and applications involving chlorinated compounds.
  • Acid Resistance: This alloy exhibits excellent resistance to a wide range of acids, including sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Its low carbon content helps prevent carbide precipitation, which could otherwise compromise its resistance to acid attack.
  • Oxidation Resistance: Stainless Steel 317L performs well in high-temperature environments, with an oxidation resistance up to approximately 870°C (1600°F). This makes it suitable for applications involving intermittent exposure to elevated temperatures, such as in industrial processes and exhaust systems.
  • Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC): The alloy’s composition reduces the susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking, which is particularly beneficial in applications where the material is subjected to tensile stress and corrosive environments simultaneously.
  • Crevice Corrosion: The superior resistance to crevice corrosion is achieved through the alloy’s molybdenum content, which enhances its protection against localized attack in stagnant or low-flow environments.
  • General Corrosion: Stainless Steel 317L demonstrates strong resistance to general corrosion in a variety of environments, including moderately aggressive chemicals and polluted atmospheres. This resistance is due to the alloy’s high chromium and nickel content, which forms a stable, protective passive film on the surface.

Fabrication Data

  • Welding: Can be welded using standard techniques, but preheating and post-weld heat treatment may be required for thicker sections to avoid sensitization.
  • Machining: Generally machinable, though it can be more challenging compared to some other stainless steels due to its higher hardness.
  • Forming: Can be cold-formed, but requires careful handling to avoid cracking.
