2304 Duplex Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate

Duplex 2304 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate (UNS S32304,1.4362)

Duplex 2304 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate (UNS S32304, 1.4362) is a lean duplex stainless steel offering a balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and cost efficiency. Its duplex microstructure, comprising roughly equal parts austenite and ferrite, provides higher mechanical strength than standard austenitic stainless steels while maintaining good corrosion resistance. The low nickel and molybdenum content make it an economical alternative to other duplex grades. Widely used in structural, chemical, and marine applications, Duplex 2304 is particularly suitable for environments requiring moderate corrosion resistance and strength.

Key Properties Duplex 2304 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate

  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to general corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and localized attacks like pitting and crevice corrosion in mild to moderate chloride environments.
  • Mechanical Strength: About twice the yield strength of austenitic stainless steels like 304 or 316, reducing the need for thicker sections and saving material costs.
  • Durability: Good toughness and ductility even at low temperatures, with resistance to fatigue and wear.
  • Weldability: Easily welded using standard techniques, with minimal risk of cracking when proper practices are followed.

Corrosion Resistance

  • Chloride-Induced Corrosion: It exhibits excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, which is a common issue in environments with high chloride levels, such as coastal areas and chemical processing facilities.
  • Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: The alloy’s high chromium and molybdenum content enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, often encountered in seawater and acidic environments.

Fabrication Data

  • Welding: Can be welded using standard methods such as TIG, MIG, and MMA, but preheating and post-weld heat treatment may be necessary to avoid issues like cracking.
  • Machining: Machining can be challenging due to its hardness and strength; use of sharp tools and appropriate cutting speeds is recommended.
  • Forming: Hot forming is generally preferred over cold forming to avoid work hardening and reduce the risk of cracking.
