Nickel 200 Sheet & Plate

Nickel 200 Sheet & Plate (UNS N02200)

Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) is a commercially pure nickel alloy renowned for its excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and thermal conductivity. With a nickel content of 99.6%, this alloy is particularly suited for applications requiring exceptional performance in harsh environments. Nickel 200 plates are versatile and widely used across industries due to their strength and reliability.

Key Features of Nickel 200 Plate

  1. Corrosion Resistance: Nickel 200 demonstrates superior resistance to alkalis, acids, and neutral or oxidizing environments. It is especially effective against caustic alkali and hydrogen chloride gases.
  2. Thermal Conductivity: With excellent heat transfer properties, Nickel 200 plates are ideal for applications involving extreme temperatures.
  3. Mechanical Strength: This alloy retains its toughness and strength even at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for demanding industrial applications.
  4. Magnetic Properties: Nickel 200 exhibits magnetic properties in specific conditions, making it suitable for electronic components.
  5. Workability: The material is easy to fabricate, weld, and form, allowing for versatility in manufacturing.

Corrosion Resistance

General Corrosion Resistance:

  • Good Resistance to Alkaline Solutions: Nickel 200 excels in environments with alkaline substances, including strong bases like sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide.
  • Neutral and Mildly Acidic Environments: It performs well in neutral and mildly acidic conditions, including water and steam. It is also suitable for some organic acids at moderate concentrations.
  • Limited Resistance to Strong Acids: Nickel 200 has limited resistance to strong acids such as concentrated hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid. It can suffer from corrosion under these conditions, especially at higher temperatures.

Specific Environments:

  • Sea Water: Provides reasonable resistance to seawater but may not be the best choice for marine applications due to better alternatives.
  • High-Temperature Applications: Effective up to about 600°C (1112°F), beyond which its oxidation resistance and mechanical properties may degrade.
  • Sulfuric Acid: Generally not recommended for use in concentrated sulfuric acid due to susceptibility to corrosion.

Additional Notes:

  • Stress-Corrosion Cracking: Nickel 200 is resistant to stress-corrosion cracking in many environments, which is a common issue in other materials.
  • Oxidation: It shows good resistance to oxidation, making it suitable for use in environments where exposure to air and high temperatures occurs.

Fabrication Data

  • Machinability: Nickel 200 is generally considered to be machinable, though it can work-harden during machining, so using sharp tools and appropriate cutting conditions is recommended.
  • Welding: It is weldable using most common methods, such as TIG, MIG, and resistance welding. Proper cleaning and handling are necessary to avoid contamination.
  • Formability: The alloy has good ductility and can be cold worked and formed into various shapes, including sheets, plates, and tubes.
  • Annealing: Annealing is often used to relieve stresses and to restore ductility after cold working. Typical annealing temperatures range from 800°C to 1000°C (1470°F to 1830°F).
