Corrosion Resistance

  • High Molybdenum Content: SSC-6MO features a substantial amount of molybdenum (Mo), typically around 6%. Molybdenum plays a critical role in improving resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion, which is common in marine and coastal environments. This makes SSC-6MO an ideal material for applications exposed to seawater or brine solutions.
  • Resistance to Pitting Corrosion: Pitting corrosion is a localized form of corrosion that leads to the formation of small holes or pits on the surface. SSC-6MO’s high molybdenum content significantly enhances its resistance to pitting corrosion, ensuring the longevity and structural integrity of components in corrosive environments.
  • Resistance to Crevice Corrosion: Crevice corrosion occurs in confined spaces where stagnant water or corrosive agents can accumulate. SSC-6MO provides robust protection against this type of corrosion, making it suitable for applications with narrow gaps or joints where crevice corrosion might otherwise occur.
  • Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance: Stress corrosion cracking can be a major concern in stainless steels exposed to tensile stress and corrosive environments. SSC-6MO is designed to resist stress corrosion cracking, even in high-chloride environments, ensuring that components maintain their strength and performance over time.
  • Oxidation Resistance: The alloy maintains good oxidation resistance at high temperatures, allowing it to withstand elevated temperatures without significant degradation. This makes SSC-6MO suitable for use in high-temperature applications where oxidation could otherwise be a problem.
  • General Corrosion Resistance: Beyond specific forms of corrosion, SSC-6MO exhibits excellent overall resistance to general corrosion. This makes it versatile for a wide range of applications in aggressive chemical environments, including acid and alkaline solutions.

Fabrication Data

  • Cutting: Can be cut using standard methods such as shearing, laser cutting, or water jet cutting.
  • Welding: Requires careful handling to avoid sensitization and to ensure weld quality. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding methods are widely utilized.
  • Heat Treatment: Typically not required, but stress relief may be done if necessary. Annealing can help in achieving desired mechanical properties.
  • Forming: Can be cold or hot formed depending on the thickness and application. Cold working is preferred for thinner plates, while hot working is used for thicker sections.
  • Machining: Standard machining practices apply. Use cutting tools designed for stainless steel to avoid excessive wear.
  • Surface Treatment: May include passivation to enhance corrosion resistance.
