Hastelloy C276 Corrosion Resistance

  • Oxidizing Environments: Hastelloy C-276 offers excellent resistance to oxidizing environments, including nitric acid and other oxidizing acids. Its high chromium content contributes to this resistance by forming a protective oxide layer.
  • Reducing Environments: It also performs exceptionally well in reducing acids such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, thanks to its high molybdenum content, which enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
  • Chloride Environments: Hastelloy C-276 is highly resistant to chloride-induced corrosion, including stress corrosion cracking and pitting. This makes it suitable for use in seawater, brine solutions, and other chloride-containing environments.
  • Sulfuric Acid: The alloy is particularly resistant to sulfuric acid, even at elevated temperatures and concentrations. This is due to its ability to withstand both oxidation and reduction processes in sulfuric acid solutions.
  • Acetic Acid: Hastelloy C-276 performs well in acetic acid, including in environments where acetic acid is combined with oxidizing agents.

Fabrication Data

  • Welding: Hastelloy C-276 can be welded using various techniques, including TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding. It is important to use filler materials compatible with the alloy to maintain corrosion resistance.
  • Machining: It is relatively challenging to machine due to its hardness and tendency to work harden. Using carbide tools and slow cutting speeds can improve machinability.
  • Heat Treatment: Generally, Hastelloy C-276 does not require heat treatment for hardness or strength. However, it can be solution annealed at approximately 1150°C (2100°F) to improve corrosion resistance.
