What is 303 Stainless Steel?

303 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel alloy developed specifically for improved machinability. The addition of sulfur enhances its cutting performance and makes it easier to work with on automatic machining equipment, without significantly compromising its corrosion resistance or mechanical properties.

While it shares many similarities with 304 stainless steel, the sulfur content in 303 makes it less suitable for welding and corrosion-critical applications. However, its machinability makes it a favorite among manufacturers producing precision components.

Fabrication Data

Machining:

  • Machinability: Excellent. 303 is specifically designed for high machinability.
  • Cutting Tools: Use high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide tools. Tool wear is minimal due to the material’s machinability.
  • Feeds and Speeds: Higher cutting speeds and feeds can be used compared to other stainless steel grades.

Welding:

  • Weldability: Generally not recommended for welding due to the risk of forming sulfide inclusions that can impair weld quality. If welding is necessary, filler rods of a similar grade may be used.
  • Processes: If welding is performed, TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is preferred.

Heat Treatment:

  • Annealing: Can be annealed at temperatures between 870°C and 925°C (1600°F and 1700°F) to relieve stresses and improve ductility. Rapid cooling is required to avoid sensitization.
  • Hardening: 303 is not heat treatable. Hardness can only be increased through work hardening.

Cold Working:

  • Forming: Can be cold worked effectively. Processes like rolling, bending, and drawing are commonly used.
  • Ductility: Good ductility makes it suitable for various forming processes.

Surface Finish:

  • Polishing: Can be polished to achieve a high-quality finish. The inherent machinability of 303 allows for a smooth finish after machining.

Dimensional Tolerances:

  • Standard Tolerances: Typically conforms to ASTM A240 or equivalent specifications, ensuring uniform thickness and flatness.
